There is a strong inclination in today’s fragile economy, for businesses to streamline their operations and eliminate unnecessary expenditure. While some of the cost savings are easy to identify across the business, others may not be, But when it comes to data centres, the simplest of solutions may reap the biggest benefits.

Many methods have been used to determine the optimum number of hosts per storage port, but in my experience there are no hard and fast rules. My recommendation would be to assess the throughput of each host you want to connect to a particular port, determine the maximum throughput of that port, and add hosts to the port so that the total throughput of all hosts is slightly higher than the throughput of the port.

Determining the steps in a storage-area network (SAN) switch configuration depends on whether you are building a new SAN fabric or adding a switch to an existing one. If this is the first switch in the SAN fabric, it will be the principal switch. You will need to configure IP details so that you can communicate with the switch via a Web browser or a command line interface. Once this is complete you should check each port for device connectivity and then disable all switch ports to ensure that rogue devices cannot join the fabric

The evolution of the data centre can be simplified into a small number of major computing shifts – the invention of the mainframe and therefore the data centre, the client server revolution, the adoption of the internet and most recently, Virtual insanity… So, as we ponder the next technological shift and its impact on the data centre, we are also forced to consider not just what the data centre will become, but also, how many of us will even own one or anything that resides in one. As virtualisation changes everything from tiering models, to DR strategies, Cloud computing, it would appear, it is about to hit the big time. Along with it, comes a potential that the infrastructure market will consolidate into a much smaller number of much larger players and therefore we may be on the precipice of rapid shifts in way technology is purchased, deployed and managed throughout all our businesses.

Achieving greater power consumption efficiency in the data center is not an overnight change, but rather a multi-year journey that provides benefits in an incremental manner as initiatives are accomplished. However, every journey begins with a first step, and a data center energy audit is where your firm can begin to make sure you\'re getting the most out of every kilowatt hour.

Many organisations look to implement server virtualisation to reduce capital and operational expenditures. While server virtualisation also provides storage managers with a variety of new features, these features can lead to additional complexity, particularly with data backup. Not only does virtualisation introduce new things that require backing up, it provides more ways to back up an organisation\'s infrastructure.

Budgets are tight, but IT directors and CIOs must prepare for business growth in 2010, according to analyst Gartner. Jeff Mann, Gartner research director, who is chairing the Gartner Cannes Symposium next month, said that after a year of slashing costs, CIOs are now beginning to spend money on IT projects. \"CIOs have used virtualization and cloud computing to drive down costs. They are now looking at how to make their businesses more agile,\" he said.

Analysts learn about the companies that they follow in a number of ways. One is to attend an analyst day(s); many-to-many (company executives to industry analysts) information intensive events put on by a supplier. Analyst gains not only facts about the company’s products and services, but more importantly knowledge about what make the company tick. That helps analysts communicate more effectively to their clients specifically and to IT organizations, such as yours, in general. GlassHouse Technologies just held its debut analyst day and clearly communicated what it does and where it is going to the analysts in attendance. Looking more deeply at GlassHouse reveals its response to the greater transformational trends in IT infrastructures that impact virtually all businesses.

The fastest growing trend in IT is virtualization, a software technology that allows you to run multiple servers on a single piece of hardware. But many misconceptions or myths surround virtualization today. Many of these myths come from limitations that existed in the past or are spread by skeptics who don\'t understand the technology. Here are a few of the common myths. Myth 1: Virtualization adds another application layer to my servers and slows them down. Myth 2: Microsoft Exchange and SQL Server cannot be virtualized. Myth 3: Consolidation ratios (virtual machines per chip) are the most important criterion.

If a server runs on a smartphone chip is it still a server? The era of such a deeply philosophical data center question is upon us. A pair of stealthy start-ups have placed smart phone chips at the center of their plans to create a new breed of low-power servers. They’re hoping that this radical take on data center hardware will attract the likes of Google, Facebook and Microsoft, which all battle energy costs on a huge scale.

Perhaps an indication that coffee at Starbucks is overpriced, but more likely that IBM is hoping that a price cut will put the brakes on Lotus e-mail customers moving to no-cost alternatives where Big Blue points out that some have endured service outages, an intrusion of annoying advertisements, and/or security and privacy irritations \"that can impact employee productivity and confidence.\"

Just because computing is done in the cloud, that doesn\'t mean it has to be insecure and subject to outages. Or so says the U.S. Defense Department who just put into operation their cloud computing services for military personnel. Originally launched a year ago, the platform, called RACE (Rapid Access Computing Environment), was initially used for the testing and development of new applications. Now, the military says RACE is ready to go live...complete with 99.999% uptime - the same as their regular computing environment. Take that, Google!

September 16, 2009 – I logged plenty of TV hours watching U.S. Open tennis (not to mention NFL season openers) over the last few weeks, all in attempt to gain some respite from the IT world. However, I was subjected to IBM’s cloud computing ad for what seemed like dozens of times during the Open. (Big Blue seems to be sparing football fans from the same torture.)

Drives that are on each \"side\" of the mirror have data striped across them in a RAID 0 format. This combination of mirrored pairs (RAID 1) and striping (RAID 0) is how RAID 10 gets its name. Because you must have at least two mirrored pairs to create a RAID 10 array, the minimum number of drives in a RAID 10 format has to be four.

Data deduplication impacts backups in different ways depending on the technology deployed. There are essentially two options:

Deduplication at the client side.
Deduplication at the back-end disk target.
Both of these options have positive impacts on backup as they result in less data residing in backup storage, which means backup targets occupy less space and use less energy for power and cooling.

Cloud network-attached storage (NAS) is emerging to address some small companies\' file storage needs. As unstructured data continues to grow, cloud NAS could be a good option for many organisations. However, it has some limitations. Ashish Nadkari, principal consultant with GlassHouse Technologies, discusses cloud NAS in this Q&A. His answers are also available as an mp3 below.

While RAID 10 and RAID 1 are both mirroring technologies that utilise half of the available drives for data, there\'s one crucial difference: the number of drives that can be used in a RAID group. RAID 1 involves only two drives that are mirrored to provide resilience in the event of a single disk failure. RAID 10 involves at least four drives, and creates a RAID 0 stripe set involving two or more RAID 1 mirrors.

SCSI and the evolution of a parallel interface
The earliest SCSI specification appeared in the 1980s as a hard disk interface. There have been numerous revisions of the standard that have increased the number of possible connections, and boosted cable length and data transfer rates

The minimum number of drives required for RAID 10 is four. RAID 10 is a combination of RAID 1 and RAID 0, the first step of which is to create a number of RAID 1 volumes by mirroring two drives together (RAID 1). The second step involves creating a stripe set with these mirrored pairs (RAID 0). In its original form this was called RAID 1+0, but has been abbreviated to RAID 10. If you had any less than four drives you would only be able to make a single RAID 1 mirror set.

A sea change is taking place in the world of IT. Many companies have been looking at smarter ways to approach storage strategies. This stems either from necessity (they are approaching critical mass on capacity, serviceable life, or functionality) or the understanding that by managing the operating environment that houses their data more intelligently, they can realise real cost benefits in both the short and long term.

Good management of IT infrastructure requires specialist skills, and when a job is a dull maintenance task that has never been subjected to the right degree of scrutiny, you need the best expertise available to do the job properly.
