How To Build An IaaS Cloud
3.833335Can you build your own internal cloud? Or even better, can you transition your existing environment to an internal cloud model? At first blush, this may seem like a herculean task, but in reality it is a matter of following a few simple rules, adopting a few disciplines, and finding some good tools.

Clouds on Campus
0Human nature has an affinity for devising and perfecting better, faster, and cheaper ways of doing things. Long considered a hotbed of IT innovation and adoption, institutions of higher education are often on the leading edge of this search. It should come as no surprise to learn, therefore, that educational institutions – combining both cutting edge research and innovative teaching models – are leading the charge in the area of cloud computing. As university CIOs move cloud computing from an experimental stage into the realm of mainstream adoption, it is worth considering the drivers, challenges, advantages, and disadvantages of cloud computing in academia alongside specific cloud initiatives among the nation’s leading universities.

Data Center Transformation
4.2Data centers today are undergoing a dramatic shift in terms of the design objectives, technology options and configurations, and functional requirements. The combination of increasing service and availability requirements, continued data growth, and capacity constraints is placing substantial pressure on organizations to adopt new approaches to accommodate current and future business needs. Adding to the challenge is the need to meet these demands while containing or reducing expenses. Of course, any transition from old to new must be accomplished without business disruption.

5 Ways to a Greener Data Center
0Going green is clearly on everyone’s mind. It is only a matter of time before every company will be forced to talk about their IT (and data center) operations in terms of their carbon footprint. This paper is not intended to be a diatribe on rising temperatures and sea-levels, and is not meant to give the reader advice on the effective recycling of office waste. Instead, the goal is to raise the awareness that the concept of a green data center need not be a big splash effort – it can start small. By following some simple but practical steps, you will quickly have an operation that is truly “green” - both economically and ecologically speaking.

The CIO's Guide to Cloud Computing
4There’s been a thunderstorm of white noise surrounding cloud computing this year. Vendors, pundits, and analysts took center stage at industry events and in the news; everyone seems to have an opinion and definition on cloud computing. And with all the chatter came mixed messages, conflicting advice and, well, cloudiness. There is good news: it’s time to filter out the hype and confusion. While still evolving, cloud computing is here to stay. CIOs need to be ready.

Critical Disaster Recovery Foundations
0With all the complexities in developing disaster recovery (DR) capabilities, there are two foundation components that are often overlooked or trivialized. These two “trivial” issues can bring the best laid plans for DR to a resume‐producing event. 1) If you don’t know what you’ve got, it is really hard to recover it. 2) If you don’t really understand application dependencies, the recovered application may not be capable of executing business functions.

2005 Storage Security Survey Results
0In the 2005 Storage Security survey, GlassHouse Technologies gauged the awareness of legal and financial threats posed by improperly secured data. The survey showed that many companies have a tenuous grip on data storage security issues, and in some cases are proceeding on wrong assumptions.

Uncovering Best Practices for Storage Management
0While developing an IT strategy is essential to supporting a business strategy and vital to managing IT for business value, not all corporations approach the development of an IT strategy in the same way. A key-differentiating factor between firms lies in their treatment of the content (or scope) of an IT strategy, and in how the strategy is implemented (e.g., using best practices). While developing an IT strategy is itself a best practice, it is only the first in a series of steps designed to enable a firm to better manage the cost of its IT operations and so achieve an increased return on its IT investment.

Storage Security Best Practices
0This paper details several key steps that should be taken to ensure that information both in transit and at rest is appropriately maintained with regard to confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The recommended approach combines extension of standard security best practices into the storage realm with particular focus on factors unique to protecting off-site storage.

The Viability of Indefinite Storage: Insights from Email Archiving
0The indefinite retention of email is one area that has received special attention because of the prevalence of email and the growing importance of email discovery in legal investigations. Accordingly, in this paper, we assess the viability and economics of indefinite email storage. We argue that indefinite storage is not a panacea – data must still be classified by value with an eye towards later discovery. We offer a working hypothesis to allow firms to look past the technical aspects of indefinite storage to instead focus on how indefinite storage can provide value to the corporation.
